Anguis Fragilis-Slow Worm - Snake - BOSCHI-1863 ATLANTE ZOOLOGICO

SUBJECT/TOPIC:

Folio-sized, Hand-colored 1863 lithograph:

Angue Comune - Anguis fragilis

Slow-worms are semi-fossorial (burrowing) lizards spending much of the time hiding underneath objects. The skin of the varieties of slow-worm is smooth with scales that do not overlap one another. Like many other lizards, slow-worms autotomize, meaning that they have the ability to shed their tails in order to escape predators. The tail regrows, but remains smaller.

These reptiles are mostly active during the twilight and occasionally bask in the sun, but are more often found hiding beneath rocks and logs. They are carnivorous and, because they feed on slugs and worms, they can often be found in long grass and other damp environments.

These Civil War era, extraordinarily beautiful, hand-colored, Italian lithographs are one of the most desirable of all natural history prints. They are extremely difficult to find in good condition.

ISTORICAL INFORMATION: This original antique hand-colored lithograph is from Boschi's/Petraroja's extremely rare work "Atlante Zoologico Popolare, opera Compilata Sui Più Recenti Lavori di Zoologia Italiani e Stranieri. (Popular Zoological Atlas, a Work Compiled from the Most Recent Works of Italian and Foreign Zoology), edited by Giovanni Boschi, lithographed by Raimondo Petraroja, Naples: 1863-1879.

The set was originally published in eight volumes: the 1st one general, the 2nd volume of which covered primates and monkeys, the 3rd, mammals and cats, the 4th, marine mammals, echidnas and platypuses, the 5th and 6th, birds, the 7th, reptiles and fishes, and the 8th, insects, invertebrates, shells and mollusks. This work contains beautiful natural history lithographs of animals in their natural environment. The landscape settings are simple yet effective compositional devices but also convey general information about the creature's habitat.

CONDITION The condition of the print is conservatively "very good" (minor edge & surface wear, occasional foxing, spotting and smudges). The colors are remarkable and vibrant on heavy-weight paper.   Please INSPECT PHOTO.

Shipping costs:   My shipping costs are calculated on three factors - getting your item to you as quickly as possible, as cost effectively as possible, and as safely as possible.  I pride myself in providing optimal protection.  I use First Class or Priority Mail on most small items; Parcel Post on larger items; and Media Mail on books and magazines. You may request expedited shipment if you are willing to pay costs. P/H is combined on multiple prints mailed at the same time. Please make your purchases from my auctions or store. I will send a combined invoice reflecting your savings.
The Nature of Prints & Engravings: It was not until the 20th century that prints were commonly produced for the print itself. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.).  While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
