Atom Bomb and Civil Defense Propaganda Films DVD

The 1950's was the start of the post war atomic age. As the world began to understand the power of atomic weapons, the cold war and the arms race officially began. Gone were the days of innocence. Man had stepped on to a new frontier, the age of nuclear weapons. During that time, much misinformation was being spread. No one new the power of nuclear weapons. The US government released a series of short films in an attempt to educate (perhaps misinform?) the general public. These civil defense films are documented and preserved here, in this rare and classic collection on DVD. Many of these films were shown to Baby Boomers in school. Makes a great gift for the aging Baby Boomer as these films do document a period in our history that many lived through. Great for educators, students, scholars, historians, as well as atomic bomb buffs. You will learn about atomic fallout, how to survive in an atomic attack as well as a gas attack.

A day called X 1955

Dramatized atomic evacuation of Portland, Oregon. Glenn Ford narrates this excellently paced film about the possible nuke attack. Well thought out pace and narration add to the mounting tension to this film to great effect.

Animated classic presenting what an atom is, how energy is released from certain kinds of atoms, the peacetime uses of atomic energy and the byproducts of nuclear fission. One of the most enjoyable propaganda films ever made, I loved this wonderfully animated film. It's very Retro, and since i like retro, i enjoyed this ad. Attempt to dispel many common myths and fallacies about radioactive fallout. This film attempts to minimize the effects of fallout and was done so in a very "pro-nuclear" point of view.

Atomic Alert 1951

Frightening civil defense procedure film aimed at Cold War-era elementary school students. A film that shows ineffectual ways for children to protect themselves in case an A-bomb falls in their home town. We mostly see Ted and his little sister Sue, who are home alone when the bomb falls. Sue calmly closes the Venetian blinds (as if that will do any good) before they go crouch in the basement.

Atomic Power at Shippingport 1958

A tour of the first commerical nuclear power plant. Apparently the Shippingport reactor had quite a long life and was finally stopped in the late 70's. The utilization of oxidized uranium must have been highly cost effective, seeing as how millions of pellets were created for seed fuel. This film documents in great and technical detail the building of the first nuclear power plant at Shippingport, Pennsylvania.

Duck and Cover 1951

Selected for the 2004 National Film Registry of "culturally, historically and aesthetically significant" motion pictures. The most recognizable civil defense film every made. Known to anyone who went to school in the 50's and 60's. In this famous civil defense film for children, Bert the Turtle shows what to do in case of atomic attack.

Our Cities Must Fight 1951

Civil defense film admonishing U.S. city dwellers to stay and fight in case of enemy invasion, rather than evacuate. Filmed in New York and other cities. In this American civil defense film, a serious conversation between a newspaper editor and his colleague is used to emphasize the problems that should occur should civilians in urban areas decide to evacuate in order to avoid a major military onslaught. According to the film, mass exodus would hamper emergency efforts, decrease productivity, and lead to a significant loss of morale. Able-bodied individuals who decide to flee the danger are regarded as treasonous. Unfortunately, the editor seems to believe that the radiation resulting from an atomic blast will subside after roughly ninety seconds.

Survival Under Atomic Attack 1951

"Explains" the dangers of the atomic bomb, the effects of radiation and how to protect oneself if caught in the open or in the home. This, out of most of the civil defense films, is one of the few most informative and realistic ones ever produced. This also actually uses stock footage of nuclear explosions, too! We also see clips of the results of the World War II nukes of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. It has good information about how the atomic bomb works, such as using radioactivity and heat to destroy.

Explains what war gas is, how it is used by the enemy, and how simple household items, such as bicarbonate of soda and bleaching solution, may be used to prevent casualties.

DVD format and quality

All of our DVD's sold are formatted NTSC, without region coding. This means that they will play on any NTSC DVD Player in the world. The standard in USA is NTSC. For those in Europe, your DVD player may be a PAL format, which will not work. For those overseas customers, please verify that your DVD player can play NTSC disks.

Please note, that most of the films on our disks were made 40 years ago or more. Some perhaps as old as 80 or 90 years! As you can imagine, the movie making equipment of the time was a lot more primitive than the high tech equipment that they use today. Also, many of these films were stored improperly for decades before being digitally coded. As a result of this, these films are not what one would consider to be "DVD quality" today. Many, if not most, are black and white. The sound and picture quality is not perfect. There are those occasional "snap, crackle, and pops" across many of these films. We feel that these imperfections add to a film's charm, and provide for a more authentic viewing experience. WIth that in mind, this collection may not be for those wishing to find digitally remastered and professional recolored duplications of the original work in perfect DVD quality. Please keep that in mind prior to purchase, since we have fully disclosed that to you.

I live in country ABC, will your DVD work in my DVD player?

Short answer, probably. Long answer, it depends. There are two formats of DVD in the world. NTSC and PAL. NTSC is the standard for the US and I believe Japan, along with some other countries too. PAL is popular in Europe. If you have an NTSC DVD player (all USA customers), this disk will work for you. If you have a PAL player, this won't. Also, many commercial DVD's out there have region coding. Without getting in a long discussion on it, none of our DVD's have any region coding, so that won't be an issue. All you need to know is whether or not your DVD player is an NTSC format.

What if my disk arrives damaged?

All items are shipped by USPS first class mail. In an effort to keep our costs down, that are passed along as low prices to you, all of our disks are packaged and shipped in economic sleeves and mailers. All of our disks are labeled with a clean label and some graphics. The disks are made this way for speed and cost, which translates into lower cost for you. We focus our efforts on the quality of the material on the disk. We do not believe in charging you an extra 3 or 4 dollars like some companies out there just to throw in a 25 cent plastic case and slap a color label on an item. We believe you purchase for content, and ours is the best, although we still believe you will be pleased with the presentation.

The estimated delivery dates shown above are ebay's estimates, not ours. Sometimes ebay's dates are completely unrealistic. Every effort is made to get your item out the next day, but once it leaves us, we ask that you please understand that we do not guarantee delivery by any date, since the USPS does not give us a guarantee either. NON-USA CUSTOMERS: Same deal above, except your packages typically have been taking about 2 weeks or so after we ship them. We've noticed that maybe 20% of overseas customers have been waiting as long as 4+ weeks for these shipments. The only explanation we can come up with is that it must be stuck in some container in some dock waiting on customs clearance. It happens, and for those 20% of customers, we apologize, but there is very little we can do about that. Your disk will arrive or we will replace it.

Multiple items purchased by the same customer may or may not be shipped in the same package, at our discretion. We do not offer any additional discounts on multiple items other than the ones noted above.
