IMPORTANT: If you have a Haslam Chart (similar to a dressmaking/tailor's square) or the Foundation Drafting Book, you only need the book in this auction to create the patterns for the fashions shown. If you do not have a Haslam Chart or Foundation Drafting Book, Bramcost Publications has published the Chart and Foundation Drafting Books in an auction titled "Haslam Curve Foundation Drafting Book" which can be found in our eBay store.

Originally published in the 1940s, Haslam's Book of Draftings No. 19 from the 1940s series contains more than 30 draftings for creating authentic vintage garments including:

  • 15 dresses
  • 1 dress with coatee
  • 1 full figure dress
  • bride's dress
  • bridesmaid's dress
  • evening gown
  • 2 blouses
  • 3 suits
  • 5 coats
  • 2 children's dresses
  • child's coat
The Haslam System consists of three major components needed to complete any of the beautiful vintage patterns:

(1) Books of Draftings
(2) Foundation Drafting Book
(3) Haslam Chart

The 1940s-1950s Books of Draftings require the use of a separate Foundation Drafting Book containing the foundation drafting instructions that are the base for all Haslam designs. If you have a Haslam Chart (similar to a dressmaking/tailor's square) or the Foundation Drafting Book, you only need the book in this auction to create the patterns for the fashions shown. If you do not have a Haslam Chart or Foundation Drafting Book, Bramcost Publications has published the Chart and Foundation Drafting Books in an auction titled "Haslam Curve Foundation Drafting Book" which can be found in our eBay store.

The Haslam System of Dresscutting is a very comprehensive pattern drafting program used to create garments based on your specific body measurements -- enabling you to create vintage fashions custom-fit to your body. Using 14 body measurements, you first create your foundation pattern using the instructions found in the Foundation Drafting Book and the Haslam Chart (sold separately in an auction titled: "Haslam Curve Foundation Drafting Book"). The foundation pattern is your "base" pattern and is used to create the rest of the pattern designs in the book. Once the foundation pattern is complete, you can create your custom-fitted patterns for any of the garments using the instructions and diagrams in the book.

There are more than 80 Books of Draftings in the Haslam System, with each book containing different draftings and fashion styles for pattern making from the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and 1950s — everything from vintage skirts and blouses to lingerie and wedding gowns to beach wear and childrens clothing. Each book is unique in the styles offered and contains clear, concise pattern draftings.

This book has line drawings for each garment to show you how each completed fashion should look. One page in the back of the book gives helpful hints for creating the specific garments and garment instructions include fabric yardage required. This book is perfect for designers, fashion illustrators, tailors and home sewers with a love of vintage fashion. The diagrams and instructions throughout the book are straight-forward and provide a comprehensive guide for creating classic styles of the 1940s.
