Marine Air Support Squadron 1

Marine Air Support Squadron 1 (MASS-1) was originally commissioned as Headquarters Squadron on 25 June 1943. In July 1947, the units name was changed to Marine Tactical Air Control Squadron 1 (MARTACRON-1) and in February 1954, the squadron assumed its present designation. The following, in a brief unit chronology shows the accomplishments and the significant events, which have shaped and defined this unit.

01 Jul 1943 Activated at MCAS Cherry Point as Headquarters and Services, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, FMF.

01 Apr 1944 Assigned to the 9th Marine Aircraft Wing, FMF, MCAS Cherry Point

31 Mar 1946 Assigned to the 2d Marine Aircraft Wing, FMF, MCAS Cherry Point.

01 Aug 1946 Re-designated to Headquarters Squadron, Marine Air Control Group 1, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing, FMF, MCAS Cherry Point.

01 Jul 1947 Re-designated Marine Tactical Air Control Squadron 1, Marine Air Control Group 1, Aircraft, FMF, Atlantic.

01 Oct 1947 Reassigned to 2d Marine Aircraft Wing.

15 Feb 1954 Re-designated to Marine Air Support Squadron 1 Marine Wing Headquarters Group, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing, MCAS Cherry Point.

02 May 1956 The Direct Air Support Center carried out its duties as controlling agency for rotary and fixed wing aircraft in the support of the Dominican Republic crisis.

30 Aug 1957 Embarked aboard USS Thuban and sailed for the Mediterranean Area.

21 Oct 1957 Embarked aboard USS Lake Champlain and sailed for Gibraltar.

01 Jun 1966 Reassigned to Marine Air Control Group 2.

01 Sept 1967 Reassigned to Marine Air Control Group 28.

01 Oct 1983 Elements of the Squadron attached to the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit, which participated in the rescue mission on Grenada.

01 Feb 1984 Elements of the squadron attached to the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit, which deployed to Beirut, Lebanon.

19 Aug 1990 Detachment A embarked aboard the USS Iwo Jima as part of the 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade, which deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

26 Dec 1990 Remaining elements of the squadron airlifted to Saudi Arabia to participate in Operation Desert Storm.

19 Mar 1991 Elements of the squadron assigned to the 24th MEU (SOC) participated in Operation Provide Comfort in northern Iraq.

16 Dec 1992 The squadron formally attaches Southwest Asia Battle Streamer with two bronze stars.

27 Jul 1994 The Air Support Element assigned to Special Purpose MAGTF Caribbean participated in Operations Restore Democracy and Uphold Democracy.

12 Mar 2000 MASS-1 awarded a certificate of commendation for the Vanceboro hurricane Floyd relief effort.

24 Apr 2000 The Squadron detaches a 7 Marine Air Support Element in support of Operation Eastern Access, in Vieques, Puerto Rico.

21 Jan 2003 Elements of the squadron attached to 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, deployed to conduct DASC (A) operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

09 Feb 2003 Squadron deploys to Kuwait attached to 3rd MAW providing Air Support Elements and DASC (A) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

27 Feb 2004 Element from the squadron deployed to Iraq attached to MASS-3 to conduct DASC (A) operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II.

13 Apr 2004 Element from the squadron deployed to Afghanistan attached to the 22d MEU in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

03 Nov 2004 MASS-1 awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, for actions while participating in Operations Iraqi Freedom.

20 Jan 2005 MASS-1 deploys to Iraq as part of II MEF providing Air Support Elements and Air Support Liaison Teams in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom.
