I was given the chance to salvage anything I wanted from a small barn that was going to be demolished. The barn was right here in my home town of Fox River Grove, Illinois. This workbench was one of many treasures I acquired.
It was in rough condition when I rescued it, I knew I could restore it to full glory. I think it came out spectacular, however you will be the judge, perhaps it will speak to you like it does to me!!
This is built like a battleship, the industrial grade frame is fantastic, it reminds me of a steel bridge..with the large rivets and big bolts&nuts..........A few of the nuts are missing below the top, it has no effect on strength...there are so many other bolts&nuts holding the top in place, as I said built like a battleship!!
The top is 3 1/4 inches thick, made of a total of 3 layers of wood. Uner the 3/4"thick oak strip top are 2 thick layers of planks, the front and side edges of the piece are covered in pine.
I love the incredible patina of all of the wood including stains, nail & screw holes, oak pegs, pinholes, orange-ish stain area on left side of top, there is even an area on the front left trim where the wood was charred from being burned(it is sealed with varnish and looks great)..no doubt a torch was used to repair/weld something.The top has some waviness/wear as you would expect with age, it just adds to the wonderful character.
The patina is second to none...patina like this can only be created by years & years of use and hundreds of projects being done on this bench
I restored the entire bench by hand, I added some of the solid oak pegs in the top to seal old holes. The entire bench has been hand sealed with varnish.
Everything including the underside of the top, the entire metal frame has been sealed, making it easy to wipe clean. the top was sealed with many, many coats of hand rubbed varnish.
Of course I left some original gray paint and surface rust(now sealed) in place to maintain a beautiful look.
I love the "X" cross bracing, it looks totally awesome
The original makers label is on the metal frame under the top(photo). This was made by "Hallowell" they are still in business as "Hallowell-List" in Florida. They make very high quality upscale metal creations, just as they were known for when this piece was made.
This piece dates from Circa 1940
The back side has the frame which protrudes about 1 inch at each leg just under the top
This seems to weigh at least 250-350 lbs.....it is built like a battleship
I love the rich look of the varnished metal frame in contrast with the wood top
I show this piece with the metal backsplash trim in place and with it removed...this is by design, the backsplash came on the piece when I acquired it ....
*****you have the choice of it being purchased/delivered with the backsplash removed & not included or left in place....(the backsplash screw holes I will leave in place for character..meaning to not plug them)...I will touch up the wood finish under the backsplash areas before shipping since the removal will inevitably scuff some varnish.....
*****if you want the backsplash to remain in place it will ship as shown....either way, just let me know your decision by phone or email a note when you purchase the piece....of course, if you are undecided you can always remove the back splash & touch up the finish yourself if you so choose
