Family History:  This surname is an English medieval surname. It is topographical for a person who lived at the top of the hill or on a piece of raised ground, originating from the Olde English pre 7th century word hiehthu, from "heah", meaning high. The surname development since 1275 includes the following: Robert atte Heyte of Oxfordshire in 1279, Jana Hayght of Yorkshire in 1548, Elizabeth Haight of London in 1602, and Martin Hoyte who married Tripossa Witford at St Georges Chapel, Mayfair, on April 1st 1751. More recent spellings include Hate, Height, Hight, Hite, Hoyt, Hoyte, Hyght and others. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Henry de la Heyt. This was dated 1275, in the Hundred Rolls of Derbyshire, during the reign of King Edward 1st of England.

At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armor encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield, and embroidered on his surcoat, the draped and flowing garment worn over the armor. Between the 11th and 15th centuries it became customary for surnames to be assumed in Europe, but they were not commonplace in England or Scotland before the Norman Conquest of 1066. Note: A Coat of Arms is sometimes also called a Family Shield, Code of Arms, Family Seal or Family Crest

Elements of the coat of arms: Shield, helmet, lion, castle

Size: Approx. 8" x 10" perfect for framing. The crest image itself is very good size, almost 5" X 7". This is a very striking print and would look great framed.

ConditionNot perfect, but very good with only very minor handling & surface wear - which disappears behind glass when framed...this is a beautiful print with striking metallic ink
