USES

Sodium carbonate is a sodium salt of carbonic acid. It usually comes in the form of a white crystalline powder. It can be extracted from the ashes of many plants, which is why it is also known as soda ash, and can be synthetically produced in a process involving salt brine from ocean water and limestone. Sodium carbonate has many uses that range from domestic to industrial or scientific.

Glass
Sodium carbonate's primary use is in the production of glass. It is combined with sand and calcium carbonate, heated to a very high temperature and then cooled very quickly to make glass.

Laundry Detergent
Sodium carbonate is also known as washing soda because it is one of the main ingredients in most laundry detergents. It works as a water softener and it is good at getting grease, oil and alcohol stains out of clothing.

Dyeing
Sodium carbonate is also used with some dyes. It helps the dye bond properly with the fibers of the material.

Regulating pH
Sodium carbonate is also used to regulate pH. This has many applications. One of them is in swimming pools to adjust the pH levels and make it more alkaline. It is used to develop photographs. It regulates the pH to maintain stable conditions in the mix of chemicals needed to develop the photograph. It is also used in toothpaste to increase mouth pH. It also works as a foaming agent in the toothpaste.

Electrolysis
Sodium carbonate also is used as an electrolyte, which helps create chemical reactions with electrodes in a process that involves electrical current and is called electrolysis.

Bricks
Sodium carbonate is also used in making bricks. It is used as a wetting agent so less water is needed to form the bricks, which reduces the drying time.
