When Red Skelton was drafted into the armed services in March 1944, Ozzie Nelson was prompted to create his own family comedy. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet was born on October 8, 1944 and first aired on CBS, the moving to NBC in October 1948, then back to CBS in April 1949. In total 402 radio episodes were produced. 

The Nelsons' own sons, David and Ricky, did not join the cast until the show's fifth year and were played by professional actors prior to their joining because they were too young.
