Auguste Victor Deroy, born in 1823 in Paris and died in Maintenon in 1906, is a French designer, engraver and lithographer. He is the son and pupil of Isidore Laurent Deroy and the brother of Emile Deroy. Eldest son of the lithographer Isidore Deroy and his wife Héloïse Villain. He is a pupil of Eugène Delacroix and a friend of Théodore de Banville, the singer Pierre Dupont and Charles Baudelaire, of whom he painted a portrait in 1844, today one of his most famous works. He painted other portraits in the same style, such as the portrait of a Little red beggar (Paris, Louvre museum). He also painted portraits of Théodore de Banville (1846, Versailles, Museum of the History of France), and Pierre Dupont (Compiègne, Palais de Compiègne).
N.B.:
This lithogravure from around 1860 was the subject, on our part, of a special
treatment in order to make disappear the outrages of time and, in particular,
the numerous foxings which smeared it. After this treatment, we pasted it on a
watermarked paper. This treatment had the effect of "rejuvenating"
it; however, it remains an authentic lithogravure from the second half of the
19th century.
