Vida y hechos del ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha compuesta por Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. En cuatro tomos, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra Published by J & R Tonson, London, 1738.

(287 x 220mm). Engraved portrait of Cervantes by George Virtue, 68 engraved plates, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials. The books also include The Life of Michael de Cervantes Saavedra by Don Gregorio Mayans I Siscar, published in 1737.

This is 4 volumes complete, and one of the most significant editions of Don Quixote, as it was the first deluxe edition and also the first edition published in Spanish in England. The engravings are fine and quite beautiful, with all pages collated and present. The contemporary bindings are in poor condition with detached boards and one broken spine. One board is also missing, including the endpaper, as shown below, but the contents is very clean, with minimal foxing and some scattered discoloration. Please refer to the photos below for a good idea of the condition of the volumes and contents. This is a perfect set for re-binding, and the last set was auctioned in 2011, so this is a very rare set and an incredible work, fit for any fine collection. We use the traditional grading system for books and magazines. The grades are Fine, Near Fine (NF) + or -, Very Good (VG) + or -, Good (G) + or -, Fair and Poor. I can't think of anything that we will be listing here which will be worse than Very Good or Good. For magazines, the grades will be Near Mint+(which will be our best grade as we don't use Mint for used or collectible magazines because any circulated magazine will have some damage, no matter how imperceptible) or -, Excellent+ or -, Very Good+ or -, Good or Poor.

-Fine or Near Mint+: Little to no wear, with at most one or two minor flaws.
-Near Fine or Excellent: Light wear, described in the listing, may contain a small marking in the book by a former owner. Possibly a bumped corner or a mark. Magazine will show a little wear, probably appears to have been read.
-Very Good (both categories): A little more wear, maybe some creasing or soiling on a magazine; definitely read. Book showing some light marks on the covers, maybe a bumped corner or two. Both should be clean inside unless noted.
-Good: Significant wear, with some soiling and probably some light rips or tears. Books are significantly worn, soiled and sunned. Very well read.
