“Closer Than Close” is a different album from the ‘Queen of Philly Soul’. Jean previously sang jazz with former husband Doug Carn, then became familiar to soul fans through her work with Norman Connors and further secured lifelong fans through her four album affiliation with Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International Records from 1976 and one further solo album for Motown in 1982.
In 1986 Jean became Jean Carne with an extra ‘e’ (for numerological reasons) and the title track became a No.1 R&B single in the USA making this her biggest hit to date! The song was composed by Terry Price and Brandi Wells, then produced by Grover Washington Jr. who also featured on saxophone. Grover completed much of the remaining album as producer, including the much loved follow up single “Flame Of Love” co-written by another of our soul heroes, Garry Glenn. On another song Maurice Starr gave Jean a contemporary mainstream feel coming of the back of his success with New Edition, and Dexter Wansel completed the project with two productions, reuniting her with the Philadelphia International maestro.
The original issue of this album on CD is near impossible to find so we are delighted to bring you this classic Jean Carne album on the 25th anniversary of its original release.- EXPANSION RECORDS
