Here on offer is a very RARE Huntley and Palmers novelty Art
Nouveau biscuit tin in the shape of a Bag or Wallet, with a handle and locking
clasp, circa 1903.
All the tin outer surfaces are decorated with
imitation brown and cream snakeskin. Both of the larger surfaces have an
embossed “Art Nouveau” ribbon-like design running diagonally across them, that
still retains a hint of its original gold colour (gilt finish).
The
hinged lid is locked closed by a “latch” clasp, that has a Huntley & Palmer
Patent applied and originally had a gilt finish, now worn off.
The
clasp is stamped with:
H & P
PATENT
The
tin still retains its swivel handle, which also would have originally had a
gold finish, again this has been worn off over time.
The
inside of the lid lightly engraved, are the words:
HUNTLEY & PALMERS
BISCUITS
READING & LONDON
The condition of the tin is
excellent for its age, no dents or dings and it is complete with a working
hinge, lock and handle, which make’s it a truly rare collectors piece!
There
are some light scratches to the tin but this does not detract from the
aesthetic appearance of this rare and stunning biscuit tin.
There
is also some light surface rust to the inside of the tin.
It measure 7” (17.8cm) long, 6” (15.3cm) high
and 3“ (7.6cm) wide and weighs 345g.
This
type of tin was a companion tin to the 'Canteen' tin of 1901-1902 and the 'Log'
tin from the same period, this was the third and last in a series of bag-shaped
tins issued by Huntley & Palmers.
The
animal skin effect was described as 'shark skin'. The tin was only produced
between 1903 and 1904 and it is believed 120,000 copies were made, but few have
managed to survive the 120 years in such good condition.
Please
see my pictures for the details of the excellent condition.
