15-16th Century Statue

made of 1 piece of oak wood, fully handcraved,

the back hollowed out, the old way of preventing the wood to split,

with many remains of old polychrome,

depicting an Apostle / Evagelist, perhaps:

Saint Peter

also known as Simon Peter and Simeon

made pre 1600, in the southern Netherlands or Low Countries,

wich are now south Netherlands, Belgium, or northern France

this Saint has full hair and a half long beard

he is looking down and left wards over the place where the book is, with closed eyes, as in thought, expressing sorrow

he is standing in contrapost on his left leg, his right knee is slightly bended

with in his, partial missing, left hand a book

his right underarm is missing, and here he probably held a key

he wears an elegantly draped red robe and an extensive, draped blue mantle

he is bare feeted

the glance you see on the pictures is in real/daylight less visible, and caused by an old layer of wax at some spots

condition: very good for it's age

the wear consistent with it's age and use,

the wood is solid and firm

the right under arm missing

the left hand partial missing

the piece of missing left hand probably also took the front of the book away
