A graduate of New York's School of Visual Arts, Tom Baril spent over fifteen years as Robert Mapplethorpe's master printer. Tom Baril has enjoyed numerous solo exhibitions worldwide, and his work is in collections from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to Amsterdam's Stedelijk Museum. Two monographs have been published on his work, Botanica (Arena Editions, 1999); and this one, the highly acclaimed 1997 self titled monograph published by 4AD.

New York: 4AD. Distributed Art Publishers. First Edition, 1997. 176 pp. Quarto. First edition limited to 2500 copies. Clothbound with tipped in reproduction. SIGNED by Tom Baril on the title page. 80 tritone reproductions printed by Allethaire Press.

Tom Baril's first monograph and the first title published by 4AD. These images, meticulously printed in tritone, are a remarkable translation of the artist's original platinum prints from pinhole photographs. Presents a range of Baril's work, including sumptuous still lifes and serene, yet other worldly cityscapes.

A very good copy in deep black rose grey linen cloth, stamped in blind at spine, with in laid photo pastedown on front cover. 80 pale rose sepia colored plates of what appear to be Polaroid black and whites. As a master photographic printer by trade, Baril is both technically and aesthetically impressive and offbeat. An important monograph, beautifully produced. The boards have a few soil spots. Some scuffing to the boards. Spine lean. Some edge wear to the pastedown. Soil spots to the top fore edge. Internally gorgeous. Tight binding.

SIGNED Tom Baril.  A very nice copy.
