Todd Hido's striking new monograph, Between the Two, weaves photographs of abandoned houses together with portraits of anonymous models in motel rooms that have obviously seen better days. Hido's uncanny ability to let seediness shine with an internal beauty was first displayed in book form with his 2001 monograph, House Hunting. That first monograph, as well as his follow-up book Outskirts, are now out-of-print, and highly sought-after in the rare book market. Between the Two comprises 35 photographs beautifully printed on matt art paper, and bound in an oversized format. This first printing is limited to 2,000 casebound copies. Todd Hido's work has been widely exhibited throughout the United States and Europe, and is included in the permanent collections of such museums as the Cleveland Museum of Art, OH; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA.

Todd Hido, a resident of the San Francisco, has cordoned off a very specific subject matter for his color photographs - suburban houses, seen from outside and inside, often shot at night or at twilight. These houses seem to be artificially lit - and are possessed by an inner glow. Unlike Robert Adams and Lewis Baltz who also take suburbia as their subject, Hido's work is not analytical or sociological, but is haunting, evocative and mysterious. These anonymous spaces are both attractive and repulsive, and elicit questions about the stories which lie behind them. The interiors are the homes whose previous owners have defaulted on their mortgages - and bear marks of sad lives and hasty departures. The subjects and light and color link Hido more to an early 20th century American realist tradition of a Robert Henri or Edward Hopper. Hido often creates groups or compositions of his images in an irregular grid pattern which suggests the physical and psychic gaps in neighborhoods.

Todd Hido’s photographs have been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, and most recently at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Le Locle, Switzerland. Other major institutions that have exhibited Hido’s work include the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; Miami Art Museum, Florida; Netherland Architecture Institute, Rotterdam; Palazzo Ducale, Genova, Italy; Samsung Museum of Modern Art in Korea; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His work was recently on view in the 49th edition of Les Recontres d’Arles, France.

Work by Hido is held in public and private collections including the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Smithsonian; and Fotomuseum Winterthur.
