SIGNED Hand Colored Intaglio with Carborundum Print
Intaglio print with carborundum from three aluminum plates printed in two shades of black and two shades of red ochre and chrome yellow (mixed), with hand coloring in alizarin red egg tempera on TH Saunders NOT paper (240gsm).
Under the guidance of his printer Jack Shirreff at 107 Worshop, Hodgkin introduced the use of carborundum to his printing process, allowing for deeper colors on a slightly embossed paper, as seen here in "Red Listening Ear". This new process, though it dramatically increases the importance of hand-color, emboldens the print's texture, encouraging a richer, more supple final work.

The seemingly casual, urgent quality of his paintings and prints belies a drawn-out process of making: it could take a year for Hodgkin to prepare to execute a single brushstroke. The resultant maximalist, saturated works on canvas, paper, wood and board can be intimately scaled and jewel-like, or oversized, opulent and theatrical. Whilst his early compositions have a collaged, geometric flatness, Hodgkin's later work (including etching and aquatint prints) increasingly incorporated more lush surface textures and complex, fluid patterns reminiscent of the Paturi miniatures from India, of which he was an avid collector.
Sir Howard Hodgkin was born in 1932 in England, and has spent most of his working career producing colourist paintings and prints that have captured the art world's love and imagination. Hodgkin's works hang somewhere in between abstract and figurative. They're difficult to categorise but the main characteristics include his use of powerful strong colours, applied from a heavily loaded wide brush; he creates pictures that are of emotions, objects, landscapes and intangible subjects. His canvases are framed during their creation and this allows Hodgkin's paintbrush to extend onto the frame, creating a sort of proscenium arch before the stage. He says of his art that he paints 'representational pictures of emotional situations'.
As one of Britain's leading artists, Hodgkin's work has attracted international acclaim and new young audiences. He represented Britain at the XLI Venice Biennale in 1984. He has been a Trustee of both the Tate Gallery (1970-76) and National Gallery (1978-85) in London. He was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize in 1985 and was knighted in 1992. His work is in the collection of museums and galleries throughout the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, the São Paulo Museum, the National Gallery of Art Washington D.C. and the Tate Gallery, London. Recent international shows include his major retrospective Howard Hodgkin Paintings: 1975-1995 organized by the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas which traveled to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, the Kunstverein fur die Rheinlande und Westfalen in Dusseldorf and the Hayward Gallery in London.
