Marcel Augis

"Artists like Marcel Augis were not aiming to send a ‘message’ to people who lived far away. Their art pieces, which recorded the destruction of rural areas in the battle zone, were for the people of France and Belgium. These works appealed to servicemen who bought them as souvenirs. Much of what they had seen would be indescribable. But these artworks might convey something about where they had been to families back home. The work of Augis, has been described as the early 20th century equivalent of modern  photojournalism.  The Imperial War Museum‘s collection includes over 50 pieces by Augis."
