In fact the thermostat is one of the most overlooked parts of the cooling system! You already know that the radiator cap increases the pressure of the water in your cooling system to stop boiling under severe loads and after shutdown. But in fact the flow restriction caused by the thermostat (even when fully open!) causes the water pump to further pressurise the water inside the block and cylinder head- up to 30psi. This is vital in the cylinder head around the combustion chamber area where thermal loads are the greatest.
