Chartpak® Colorless Blending & Transfer AD Marker

This is a colorless blender marker, filled with Xylene solvent. Artists use these pens for blending ink colors, but they work well for transferring copied images onto a wide variety of surfaces, including rubber stamp carving material, linoleum, cloth, tile, paper, wood, copper and many other materials.

Xylene has a rather strong odor, but transfers made with this method leave no residue, unlike inkjet iron-on transfer sheets, and xylene is far superior to acetone for image transfer quality.

To transfer an image:

  1. Make a copy of the image you wish to use. Either color or black-and-white will work, but it must be done on a photocopier or a laserjet printer. Copies from common household inkjet printers will not work. (The machine must use toner, not ink cartridges!)
  2. Cut out the image, leaving a little room around the edges for tape.
  3. Place the image face-down on your work surface and tape it firmly in place.
  4. Use the blender marker to "color" over the back of the image, applying a bit of pressure. The paper will become translucent and the image will show through.
  5. Use the back of a spoon or the flat of a bone folder to burnish firmly over the image.
  6. Peel off the paper to reveal the transferred image.
