Tiffen 62mm 10-Stop ND Neutral Density Filter  3.0 -  NEW

This is Tiffen's  10-Stop ND Filter - recently remarketed as the AXent.

This is a 10-stop ND Filter generally used for long exposures - this is not a Variable ND filter which is a completely different type of filter - you can find them in our other listings.

This filter is designed for full frame DSLR cameras when used primarily in B&W mode. It can also be used on FUJI’s X-Trans APS-C cameras (with interchangeable lenses) to obtain a highly stylized IR color effect when combined with lenses approved for IR photography.

The Tiffen ND 3.0 is a Neutral Density filter providing 10-stop exposure absorption. The high density blocks light emission of the visual spectrum into the camera, allowing you to photograph with a much slower shutter speed or at a wider aperture than required. This gives the photographer two techniques; the filter is ideal then for long exposures in which anything with movement in the image is desired to appear blurred. The second is in which the photographer needs to use faster or more wide open lens apertures to create less depth of field.

  • Reduces amount of light passing through camera lens without changing color of scene.
  • Especially useful in bright light conditions to help prevent overexposure; balances exposure
  • Eliminates overly bright, washed-out images
  • Controls depth-of-field
  • Allows slower shutter speeds to produce blurred motion effects

As per the description this filter operates in the visual spectrum - if you are using it on a digital camera which has poor internal infrared filtering you may need an IR ND filter or a Hot Mirror IR ND (APEX) rather than an ND filter - both of these are available in our other listings.

Please check your camera does not have an issue with infra-red contamination before buying this filter - otherwise your images may have a strong colour cast which cannot be corrected in software or with white balance.

Tiffen make 3 different 10-stop filters . This filter operates in the visible spectrum.  Digital sensors are very sensitive to infra-red light and manufacturers have internal infra-red filters to block IR - however these filters vary between models of camera and many let though a little infrared. This is not normally an issue but when you put a 10-stop visible light filter on the camera the effect is to reduce the visible light by about a factor of 1000 - but the infrared is unchanged so basically you now have 1000 times more infrared coming through the lens compared to the visible light and if the internal IR filter in the camera is not perfect you get a bad colour cast which can't be corrected as it is across multiple channels. That is why TIffen make two other 10-stop filters - an IR ND which extends the ND into the infrared spectrum and a Hot MIrror (HM) IR ND which takes the IR ND filter and adds an infrared reflector layer. - the HM IR ND is the best option if you are experiencing IR contamination, the various layers do produce a slight colour cast but it can be corrected easily using manual white balance or in photo editing software.
