Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone (Bay City, 16 agosto 1958) è una cantautrice, attrice, scrittrice, regista, ballerina e produttrice discografica e cinematografica statunitense, molto popolare in tutto il mondo sin dagli anni ottanta. Nata a Bay City nel Michigan, Madonna è la terza di sei fratelli. Sin da piccola Madonna fu iscritta a corsi di canto e di danza, dimostrando di avere notevoli qualità soprattutto in quest’ultima disciplina. Madonna frequentò la Rochester Adams High School, eccellendo soprattutto negli sport e come membro della squadra di cheerleaders. Dopo essersi diplomata nel 1976, Madonna ricevette una borsa di studio per la danza per frequentare l’University of Michigan, dove ebbe come insegnante di balletto Christopher Flynn. Nel 1977, sotto l’incoraggiamento di Flynn, Madonna lasciò il college alla fine del secondo anno per recarsi a New York e proseguire la sua carriera come ballerina e cantante. Durante questo periodo Madonna frequenta Dan Gilroy, col quale forma la band dei Breakfast Club. Nel 1982 Madonna conosce il dj Mark Kamins, e firma il suo primo contratto discografico con la Sire Records che, nell'ottobre dello stesso anno, pubblica il suo primo singolo, Everybody, che raggiunse la posizione numero 3 della Billboard Dance Chart. Lanciato soprattutto dal successo della title track Like a Virgin (al primo posto per 6 settimane in America e in molti paesi del mondo), il disco diventa un successo planetario grazie anche al successo dei singoli Material Girl, Angel e Dress You Up. "Like a Virgin" ebbe enorme successo negli Stati Uniti, dove ha venduto oltre 10 milioni di copie ed è stato certificato come disco di diamante. Sino ad oggi "Like a Virgin" ha venduto nel mondo oltre 21 milioni di copie. Nel giugno del 1986 Madonna pubblica il suo terzo album, True Blue. L'album è un'autentica raccolta di successi, anticipato dalle numero 1 Live to Tell e Papa Don't Preach, seguito poi dal brano che dà il titolo all'album, e piazza nella "Billboard Top 10" le hits True Blue e La Isla Bonita. Nel 1986 Madonna recita nel film Shanghai Surprise accanto al neo-marito Sean Penn, e come protagonista nel film commedia Who's That Girl, che fu un mezzo fiasco al botteghino, ma un grande successo di vendite per la colonna sonora (disco di platino negli U.S.A.), che include 4 successi di Madonna: Who's That Girl (che raggiunge la numero 1 della classifica americana), Causing a Commotion, The Look of Love e Can't Stop. L'album contiene Like a Prayer, Express Yourself, Cherish, Keep It Together, Dear Jessie, la top 20 hit Oh Father ma anche Love Song in cui Madonna duetta con Prince. Con Like a Prayer Madonna sperimenta diversi stili musicali, con incursioni nel rock, nel R&B, e nel gospel. L'album vende 17 milioni di copie e viene certificato 4 dischi di platino negli USA. Il brano Like a Prayer diventa in breve tempo il singolo più venduto di Madonna negli anni ottanta con oltre 4 milioni di copie.

Music è il suo ottavo album in studio pubblicato nel 2000. La versione in vendita è la prima rara stampa, pubblicata il 18/09/200 e caratterizzata dal prezzo riportato sulla OBI di Yen 2.520. La popstar si affianca all'eclettico artista franco-afghano Mirwais Ahmadzaï, musicista a lei praticamente sconosciuto prima di questa collaborazione. Per alcuni brani Madonna si avvale anche della collaborazione, in parte minore rispetto a Ray of Light, di William Orbit. Nell'album Madonna fa ampio uso del vocoder in brani fortemente elettronici e sperimentali come Impressive Istant e Nobody's Perfect. Oltre ai singoli Music, Don't Tell Me e What It Feels Like for a Girl, sono presenti canzoni come Paradise (Not for Me), lenta ballata cantata in inglese e francese, pubblicata anche sull'album "Production" di Mirwais. Con una durata di oltre 6 minuti e mezzo, Paradise (Not for Me) era all'epoca la canzone più lunga incisa da Madonna. Nella versione europea, giapponese e australiana dell'album è presente la cover di American Pie, incisa lo stesso anno per la colonna sonora del film Sai che c'è di nuovo?. La versione giapponese ed australiana dell'album contiene anche il brano Cyber-raga, adattamento di un testo tradizionale tratto dal Veda e dal Mahābhārata, due testi sacri della religione induista. Inizialmente intitolato Cyber shadu (lo shadu è un santone indù, mentre il raga è una forma melodica indù), Cyber-raga è scritto interamente in sanscrito, e pubblicato per il singolo Music. Successivamente è stato pubblicato anche nella versione europea del singolo di Don't Tell Me. Il co-autore Talvin Singh aveva già lavorato con Madonna realizzando un remix di Nothing Really Matters. Dall'album sono stati estratti tre singoli, oltre ad American Pie. Secondo indiscrezioni Madonna era intenzionata a rilasciare come quarto singolo Impressive Instant ma la casa discografica era contraria a tale scelta preferendo Amazing. Poiché Madonna si rifiutò di girare il video di "Amazing", i progetti per un quarto singolo furono cancellati. I brani dell'album sono stati eseguiti dal vivo nel 2001 per il Drowned World Tour. Born in Bay City, Michigan, Madonna is the third of six children. As a child enrolled in courses Madonna was singing and dancing, and showed that significant quality, especially in the latter discipline. Madonna attended Rochester Adams High School, excelling especially in sports and as a member of the team of cheerleaders. After graduating in 1976, Madonna received a scholarship to attend the dance for the University of Michigan, where he had as a ballet teacher Christopher Flynn. In 1977, under the encouragement of Flynn, Madonna left college at the end of the second year to travel to New York and continue his career as a dancer and singer.
