As Capa once said: "If your pictures are no good, you're not close enough." Capa was close enough during the Spanish Civil War to lose his girlfriend, close enough on D-Day and through-out the rest of the WWII and then close enough in Vietnam to be killed by a land mine. He was the model of the swash buckling photojournalist. Slightly Out of Focus is a contradiction in terms, being the natural climax of a special kind of publishing achievement at the same time that it is a completely different sort of book. Henry Holt and Company published the three top reporters of World War II; Ernie Pyle, who wrote the war, Bill Mauldin, who drew it, and Bob Capa, who photographed it and wrote about it too. This is not a book of photographs with captions. These are the hundreds of pictures Bob Capa took throughout the fighting. They have been made into chapters and they alternate with the frank, airy, true story of a young man, Bob Capa, whose romance with a girl called Pinky kept getting involved with his trips to the fighting fronts." A very entertaining and readable account of his life through World War II. One of the entries in Roth, Book of 101 Books. Incredible photos.
