Margriet Smulders is renowned for her remarkable photographic floral still-lives, which can be found in many museums as well as private and corporate art collections. Inspired by Dutch still-lives from the seventeenth century, she began making staged ‘floral portraits’ in 2000. Against a backdrop of mirrors, she creates compositions of sensual flowers, supple fabrics, twisted glass, water, ink and milk. The flowers in her work are fully blossomed, about to wither. They are the actors in theatrical settings that refer to Smulders’ personal life. Behind the frivolous surface mysterious, sometimes even ominous depths are hidden, as suggested by the unexpected presence of elements such as insects, frogs and inedible fruits. The large size, richness and depth of the scene allow the viewer to completely lose himself in the art work.
