The Oath of Allegiance and the Sovereign's Shilling

Since the reign of Queen Victoria, it has been legal requirement for every Sailor or Solider to say an Oath of Allegiance to the reigning Monarch. The words hold dearly to everyone who has spoken to them.  The Sovereign's shilling, sometimes called the King or Queen's shilling, is an historical slang term referring to the payment of one shilling given to recruits to the Armed forces of the UK in the 18th and 19th centuries, although the practice dates back to the end of the English Civil War. To "take the shilling" was to agree to serve as a sailor or soldier in the Royal Navy or the British Army and the term is still used informally.

Our personalized Oath of Allegiance with the Sovereign's Shilling is a fantastic gift or keepsake for any former or still serving sailor, solider or airman. Each Oath is hand made by ex- service personnel so we can guarantee it is made with real pride and passion.

This unframed Oath is printed on A4 high quality thick Parchment card.

It comes with an MOD licensed cap badge and a coin bearing the head of the Monarch (we always try to use a coin bearing the year of enlistment where we can) and a beautiful facsimile in the style of the Monarch on enlistments signature.  The ribbon flash represents the colours of the regiment or Corps staple belt.
