Imponente albero semi-deciduo, a rapida crescita alto fino a 20 m, la cui chioma può raggiungere i 15-30 m di diametro, caratterizzato da radici nodose affioranti dal terreno in prossimità del fusto e da un tronco breve e tozzo, diviso in più rami larghi fino a 2 m. Le foglie sono alterne, ovato-lanceolate, mucronate all'apice, verdi con nervatura mediana rossastra, picciolate. I fiori, unisessuali su piante distinte, sono piccoli, bianco-giallastri, riuniti in grappoli penduli; i maschili hanno 20-30 stami, i femminili hanno un ovario di 7-10 carpelli saldati. I frutti sono bacche carnose, di colore bruno a maturità. Periodo di fioritura Fiorisce tra la primavera e l'estate. Si coltiva come albero da ombra per il portamento imponente, la chioma espansa e il fogliame persistente a lungo. In Italia, la specie risulta inselvatichita nell'isola di Salina. Difficilmente viene attaccata da parassiti animali. Si tratta di una specie particolarmente longeva la cui età è difficilmente dimostrabile poiché il legno è privo di cerchie annuali. La pianta mostra, inoltre, una notevolissima resistenza al fuoco perché i suoi tessuti sono particolarmente ricchi di acqua (oltre l'80 % nei rami e nel fusto); ciò fa sì che mentre le parti verdi non bruciano, quelle secche non sprigionano fiamme. |

Tutto l’anno in serra riscaldata. In primavera all'aperto in luogo riparato. Imbibire i semi in acqua tiepida per 48 ore(cambiare l’acqua una volta) seminare in un composto sabbioso; ricoprire i semi uno strato di terriccio di 2 mm. Mantenere sempre umido; Coprire il semenzaio con una lastra di vetro, tenere in un luogo caldo e all'ombra. Germinazione in 6 settimane. |

Description |
The tree has an umbrella-like canopy that spreads to a girth of 12 to 15 meters (40 to 50 feet) and can attain a height of 12 to 18 meters (40 to 60 feet). The ombú grows fast but being herbaceous its wood is soft and spongy enough to be cut with a knife. Because of this, it is also used in the art of bonsai, as it is easily manipulated to create the desired effect. |
