Item #12538 – Compagnie Générale Transatlantique TEV Normandie Over-Sprayed Jean Luce Pottery Ashtray Circa 1936

Items that tell a story are especially collectible and this piece is a perfect example. The Jean Luce Art Deco ashtray designed for Normandie. These pocket-able little gems disappeared from the ship in such quantity that remaining stock were altered by the manufacturer so that the ship's name was obliterated in hope that pilfering would be reduced - hence the dark reddish-brown band on the base. When held under bright light one can still discern "SS Normandie" beneath the over-glaze. A very good example, exhibiting some crazing, a bit of tobacco staining in the bottom of the bowl and tiny impurities in the glaze. No nicks or chips! 3” x 2.5” x 0.75” in height.
