In the seventh century the first kingdoms appeared; they linked to the Empire of Ghana. In the 11th century, what is now the dominant religion of the country began to spread: Islam.

The Portuguese in 1500 were the first to settle in the country, while the French in 1659 founded the first capital of Senegal: the city of Saint-Louis. Later it became a French colony and then gained independence from France on April 4, 1960 which became effective on June 20 of the same year.
