ABOUT THE AREA:
This area is surrounded by the Carson National Forest and BLM Land. This will help preserve the area and protect it from overbuilding. This also Protects the Wildlife which is why you will see Elk, Pronghorn Antelope, Black Bear, and Deer grazing in this area. This entire area is covered in Mountain Sagebrush and Native Grasses with some Juniper and Pine.

The Rio Grande River Gorge is just down the road. Over time the Rio Grande River in this area has cut an Incredibly Deep Canyon. The Gorge River Bridge Crossing the River is the 2nd Highest Suspension Bridge in the USA. We walked out on this bridge to look at the river far below and we watched the White Water Rafters make their way down the Canyon. This bridge is about 800 feet above the water level as you will see in the picture below.

They can lift more than 15,000 skiers per hour with one lift reaching the 11,819-foot level. Angel Fire Resort is only 24 Miles from Taos and has 67 Trails. They were Host to The 2004 USASA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS which is the World's Largest Snowboarding Event. The Red River Ski and Snowboard Area is only 36 miles from Taos and has 57 Trails. Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort is 22 Miles from Taos and has 31 Trails. These resorts all offer year round activities, and there are several other Ski Resorts in this area as well.

The Town of Taos is almost surrounded by the Carson National Forest which covers much of TAOS COUNTY. The town of TAOS is nestled up at the base of the SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS and sits on the RIO PUEBLO DE TAOS River just before it empties into The RIO GRANDE RIVER. TAOS PUEBLO is supposed to be the Oldest Continuously Inhabited Village in the entire USA. The TAOS PUEBLO INDIANS have lived in this same community for 1000 years. You can walk among them in their Abode Style Village and visit their shops. This Adobe style of construction is very prominent in the area. TAOS was home to KIT CARSON in the mid 1800's who helped settle the area. Early in the 1900's the town became a Mecca for Artists of all types and is still one of the main Artistic Centers of the west.

Today TAOS is a proud blend of Native Indian, Spanish, and Anglo Cultures. It is a Shoppers Paradise with Art Galleries, Western Wear Shops, Antique Stores, Gift Shops, Jewelry Stores, and more than 50 Restaurants, and Cafes. It is home to the TAOS MOUNTAIN CASINO, which is located near the Taos Pueblo Village. There are many things to see and do in town as there are several Museums, Historic Landmarks, Theaters, Film Festivals, and Cultural Events to visit and enjoy.

In 1969 the Movie "Easy Rider" was filmed in the Taos area. Dennis Hopper liked the area so much he moved to Taos the following year. TAOS is a rapidly growing area. The 1995 population was 6,213 for the Town of Taos, and 25,581 for Taos County. By the year 2000 the Taos County Population had jumped over 17% to 29,979. This area is growing at twice the state's average. The main route into Taos is Route 68 from Sante Fe, and it is presently undergoing Major Renovations into a Modern 4 Lane in sections. This should allow easier access in and out of the area.

TAOS seems to have all of the right ingredients for continued and accelerated growth. There has already been a tremendous increase in the price of real estate in the town of Taos. A county official told us an acre of bare ground in the Town of Taos was bringing an average of $132,000. We were told the usable rural land close to town is already worth several times its value of just a few years ago. There has been a real escalation in land prices in and around Taos. The mountains surrounding the town of Taos is limiting the expansion in those directions. On a map you will see all of the "Off Limits" National Forests and Indian Reservation Land that surrounds Taos. As a result Taos does not have many directions it can grow into.
