Eric Clapton reached the peak of his popularity in the '90s, as the back-to-back number one albums Unplugged and From the Cradle combined for a total of over 13 million sales in the U.S. alone. One strange thing about Clapton's '90s success is that it relied almost entirely on covers and new versions of classic hits; he released no albums of new material between 1989's Journeyman and 1998's Pilgrim. In the decade between the two albums, he had two new hits -- his moving elegy to his deceased son, "Tears in Heaven," and the slick contemporary soul of the Babyface-written "Change the World" -- and Pilgrim tries to reach a middle ground between these two extremes, balancing tortured lyrics with smooth sonic surfaces. Working with producer Simon Climie, his collaborator on the TDF side project, Clapton has created a calm record. His singing is mannered, even on emotionally turbulent numbers like "My Father's Eyes" or "Circus," and he's content to take a back seat instrumentally, playing slight solos and fills.

zehn Jahre sind vergangen seit seinem letzten Album mit Originalmusik.
Fast schien es, als würde er sich als Retro-Mann vollkommen dem Blues
verschreiben. Jetzt hieß es im Vorfeld der Veröffentlichung sogar, daß
der Fans mit einem Versuch von Modernität rechnen müsse. Na ja. Es gibt
slow songs wie gehabt, der Blues ist präsent, auch akustische Motive.
Das Programming bleibt dezent, dafür gibt´s auch mal laute Fuzz-Gitarre.
Der Rest ist pseudo-funky und erinnert an Zeiten, als der Soul zum
Phillysound mutierte. Das Ganze wird oft mit dem London Session
Orchestra voluminös orchestriert. Ganz nett. Wer aber einst für den
Spruch "Clapton ist Gott!" verantwortlich zeichnete, hat den Mann

Mit
"Pilgrim" beendet Eric Clapton seine Schaffenspause seit der 1994er
Blues-Hommage "From the Cradle". Doch halt: War da nicht was? Klar doch:
die 96er Single "Change The World" zum Beispiel - und vergangenes Jahr
ein Projekt namens TDF, hinter dem sich niemand anders verbarg als Simon
Climie (Ex-Climie & Fisher, deren einziger echter Hit 1988 "Love
Changes Everything" hieß), und eben "Slowhand" höchstpersönlich. Die
Kooperation zeitigte auf "Retail Therapy" eine Art Ambientpop mit
Gitarren-Garnitur - und sie wirkt bis heute nach. Climie agiert nicht
nur als Keyboarder, sondern, zusammen mit Clapton, auch als Produzent -
mit Auswirkungen vor allem auf den rhythmischen Sektor. Oft geben
dezente Dancebeats den Takt an ("Pilgrim", "One Chance", selbst in
"Broken Hearted" mit keltischer Whistle), und häufig schmückt allerlei
elektronisches Beiwerk die Titel. Diese kommen meist als klassisch
durchkomponierte Popsongs daher; Single-Kandidaten sollten sich daher
reichlich finden lassen. Als erstes fiel die Wahl auf den Pop-Reggae "My
Father's Eyes": melodisch etwas schwach auf der Brust, was "Slowhand"
aber mit ausnehmend schönem Spiel wettmacht. Durchweg fein gelangen die
Balladen, allen voran "You Were There": ein würdiger Nachfolger für
"Change The World". Begleitet wird der Chef von langjährigen
Weggefährten wie Andy Fairweather-Low (Gitarre) oder Drummer Steve Gadd
sowie prominenten Gästen wie Paul Carrack (Orgel), Joe Sample (Piano)
und Bassist Natan East, die allesamt so präzise wie diszipliniert

Das 13. Studioalbum der Gitarrenlegende war 1997 das erste mit eigenem Songmaterial nach "Journeyman", das acht Jahre zuvor erschien. Seiner Autobiografie zufolge wollte Clapton zu diesem Zeitpunkt das traurigste Album schreiben, das ihm möglich war. Nach dem Tod seines Sohnes im Jahr 1991 entstanden bereits "My Father's Eyes und "Circus", die auch auf "Pilgrim" enthalten sind.
Das wie immer brillante Gitarrenspiel Claptons wird auf dieser Aufnahme ergänzt um Synthesizer und Drum Machines, als Produzent agierte Simon Climie. "Pilgrim" wurde weltweit mehrfach mit Platin ausgezeichnet. Das Remastering für die Hybrid-SACD übernahm Steve Hoffmann in den Studios von Marsh Mastering. From the song titles ("River of Tears," "Broken Hearted," "Going Down Slow," "Sick and Tired") on down, Pilgrim is the musical journal of an artist who has wandered into some dark places and come back the wiser for his troubles. 1998's Pilgrim is the 13th studio album by Eric Clapton, it was his first album of original material since 1989's Journeyman.
The album is an intriguing musical tableau that experiments with drum machines and synthesized dashes of electronica and an inventive use of strings, performed by the London Session Orchestra, reminiscent of old-school R&B. There is wonderful, graceful guitar work throughout Pilgrim, Clapton provides some great hooks and emotional melodies. The best songs on this eloquent album of orchestrated blues meditations express a choked-up grief and despair. The songwriting is the standout feature of this album. Clapton wrote in his autobiography that he wanted to make the "saddest album." He wrote or co-wrote every song except "Born in Time," an overlooked Bob Dylan tune, and "Going Down Slow," a classic blues written by St. Louis Jimmy. In two songs, "My Father's Eyes" and "Circus," Clapton alludes to the tragic death of his 4-year-old son. The songs are very moving with more complicated melodies and in depth lyrics. Clapton's emphasis is placed on the entire arraingement instead of being built around a jam session.
Eric's voice has never sounded better, his singing is raw and passionate, much of the music is informed by smooth R&B textures. On the album's sizzling title track, he evokes some of the soulful eloquence of the great Curtis Mayfield. Clapton's vocals are among the most convincing of his career. Pilgrim is an atmospheric album whose mood is mostly melancholy. Unbearable loss and yearning are the central themes of Pilgrim, and with its heartbeat bass lines, melodic, meditative guitar figures and heartbreaking lyrics, it offers moments of pure beauty.
The album produced multi-platinum sales and appeared on the year-end Top 100 lists of countries all around the world.
