Basic Crystal Radio Set
Single Tank Circuit with Germanium Diode Variable Capacitor and a Crystal Earpiece
this is not about performance, its the very basic crystal radio circuit and it's one of
the very first steps of our beloved Amateur Radio Hobby.
in my location (Athens - Greece) using a 10 meter vertical wire antenna and the mains
ground I'm able to listen 3 - 4 MW stations during daylight, 729khz ERT local broadcast
and 2 - 3 more local MW pirate stations
during the night the received stations could reach or exceed the number of 10
including distant stations from Hungary,Romania and some Arabic spoken and others.
if you haven't any experience with crystal radio till now please know,
this works without battery or any external power source, it only needs the RF power
coming from the antenna so good - long external antenna i very important
also since there is no amplifier the audio is not loud but it's audible
normal modern headphones will not work.
there are 3 contact antenna terminals
one for ground connection (GND)
one antenna connection directly to the tank circuit (ANTENNA 1)
and one antenna connection through a 56pf capacitor (ANTENNA 2)
ANTENNA 2 connection gives lower sensitivity but it's used when your antenna
has a lot of self parasitic capacitance that can affect and reduce the upper
frequency end of the tank circuit.
detector diode is the very sensitive Russian germanium diode
D311 that usually measures 0.18V VF.
variable capacitor is 550pF
coil is fixed and wrapped externaly
a crystal earpiece is included
dimensions: 70mm diameter 45mm high
material: impregnated paper, plastic
you get what you see in the first picture.
