Together they are the New Reference on Sceattas from Frisia – England (690-760).

Metcalf and Op den Velde have estimated that more than 50 million coins of this type have been minted on the basis of a stamp corpus of over 3500 porcupine / standard sceattas. The production started around 695. There were two major production centers in the Netherlands, the largest lying south of the major rivers, a smaller coin was situated in Friesland. About 10% of the total are imitations produced outside the borders of the current Netherlands. These coins had a dual function; they were intended for daily local transactions, but especially for international trade, especially with England. There are indications that the porcupine sceattas have remained in circulation for longer than previously assumed, possibly until after 800. The large number of coins and the sites are evidence of an already highly developed money economy in the 8th century, with intensive trade relations
