Folk art applique and embroidered textile art from Bihar, India, titled “School Under the Banyan Tree”. Work is silk fabric for the applique and cotton thread embroidery; 47" x 36"; in new, excellent condition.

I bought many Bihar textile pieces done in women's cooperatives, all depicting themes in the lives of women in India. The works were shown by an Indian art dealer at one of the early International Folk Art Markets in Santa Fe, at the Museum of International Folk Art, but, since the market now only accepts the artists themselves or artist cooperatives, and not dealers, the works have not been available to me recently, and I do not know of any other sources at this time. This is a beautiful, decorative work with an overall pattern of the trees with birds in them, and the school houses below with the cute boys and girls! A great addition to your folk art collection.
