Vintage Dogon, Mali handwoven cotton strip African indigo fabric, dyed with the resist, stitch dyeing technique in a unique design that uses “dots” to form rare “hand”, and “gourd" symbols, as well as beautiful patterns of diamonds/zig-zags, and larger circle, and “shell” images. I was fortunate to buy several similar pieces in my last shipment, many which had colored embroidery and fringe on them signifying that they were used in weddings. This piece has some varied color yarn on the edges so was probably also used in a Dogon wedding.

42” x 57”, 7 strips of slightly heavier weave, and a nice variation in the color due to wear and different dyeing of the threads. Excellent condition: one end hand hemmed, the other with yarn fringe; some edge wear; some fading on part of piece from wear, but a nice, overall varied blue color. A very collectible work for the design!

I was lucky to have “first choice” of several shipments of indigos, as they arrived directly from Africa, and have many that I will be selling. I picked ones that were in the best condition, and/or the most unique, but there are almost always a few flaws, which I will note in my listings and photographs.
