A rare Civil War printing of Dennis Mahan’s ‘Elementary Treatise on Service of Troops’. In 1847, Mahan published this short history of American military arts which features important sections on battle tactics, handling troops, placing troops in battle, troop movement and positions, military reconnaissance, convoys, surprise attacks, and much more.

 

In 1861, at the outset of the Civil War, both the Union and Confederacy reissued this work for their soldiers. The Confederate issue was published in New Orleans and the Union published theirs in New York.
