Alexandre Alekhine, fourth world champion, had a complicated relationship with the Soviet. Supposedly he was to be shot as a Russian Nobleman, but a Soviet chessplayer who was the commissar-in-charge recognized him and saved him. He then married a woman who was prominent in the Comintern so he could get out of the USSR. Once out, he never went back; during World War 2 he openly collaborated with the Nazis. After the war there was a call to boycott him, but the USSR wanted a match between him and Mikhail Botvinnik for the world title. Alekhine died before that could happen. This is a chess biography of Alekhine written by Alexander Kotov, himself a great master.  Russian algebraic notation.   We combine shipping!
