    China Rose - Rosa chinensis

Class: Magnoliopsida   Order: Rosales   Family: Rosaceae   Subfamily: Rosoideae   Genus: Rosa   Species: R. chinensis

Rosa chinensis, known commonly as the China Rose is a member of the genus Rosa native to central China in Guizhou, Hubei, and Sichuan.

It is a shrub growing to 1-2 m tall. The leaves are pinnate, with 3-5 leaflets, each leaflet 2.5–6 cm long and 1–3 cm broad. In the wild species (sometimes listed as Rosa chinensis var. spontanea), the flowers have five pink to red petals. The fruit is a red hip 1-2 cm diameter.

The species is extensively cultivated in China as an ornamental plant; numerous cultivars have been selected, with varying flower colour and usually an increased number of petals (semi-double or double flowers). The species is also important in the breeding of many modern garden roses, including the Hybrid Tea roses.

The flowers and fruits are used in traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of irregular and/or painful menstruation, as well as swollen thyroid.

    Watermelon - Citrullus lanatus

Order: Cucurbitales  Family: Cucurbitaceae  Genus: Citrullus

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.), family Cucurbitaceae) is a vine-like (scrambler and trailer) flowering plant originally from southern Africa. Its fruit, which is also called watermelon, is a special kind referred to by botanists as a pepo, a berry which has a thick rind (exocarp) and fleshy center (mesocarp and endocarp). Pepos are derived from an inferior ovary, and are characteristic of the Cucurbitaceae. The watermelon fruit, loosely considered a type of melon – although not in the genus Cucumis – has a smooth exterior rind (green, yellow and sometimes white) and a juicy, sweet interior flesh (usually deep red to pink, but sometimes orange, yellow and even green if not ripe).

    Scratchweed - Galium bungei

Order: Gentianales  Family: Rubiaceae  Tribe: Rubieae  Genus: Galium

Galium is a large genus of annual and perennial herbaceous plants in the family Rubiaceae, with about 400 species occurring in the temperate zones of both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Most species are known as bedstraw.

Bedstraws are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species.

A straggling, annual plant with a slender TAPROOT and weak square STEMS which clings to other plants (and anything else it contacts, including clothes, pets' fur, etc) with small, curved prickles at the angles of the stems and on the veins and edges of the leaves. Can be found throughout the Northern Hemisphere in moist or grassy places and along river banks. LEAVES linear-lancelolate to 2 inches long and whorled (6 to 8) around the stem. Greenish-white FLOWERS appear on peduncles in small, loose cymes of 2 to 5. FRUITS are small burs covered with hooked bristles, appearing as two joined burs each containing one seed.

Used in Chinese medicine as an anodyne, detoxicant, diuretic, febrifuge and to reduce swellings. Has been used in decoction form for abscesses, boils, cancerous tumors, dysentary, fever, gonorrhea, leucorrhea, and failure to thrive in children.

In China the seeds are dried, then roasted and used as a coffee substitute. Has been cooked like spinach.

    Japanese Maple -  Acer palmatum

Order: Sapindales Family: Sapindaceae Genus: Acer

Acer palmatum, called Japanese Maple or Smooth Japanese Maple is a species of woody plant native to Japan, North Korea, South Korea, eastern Mongolia, and southeast Russia. Many different cultivars of this maple have been selected and they are grown worldwide for their attractive leaf shapes and colours.

Acer palmatum is a deciduous shrub or small tree reaching heights of 6 to 10 m (20 to 33 ft), rarely 16 metres (52 ft), often growing as an understory plant in shady woodlands. It may have multiple trunks joining close to the ground. In habit, it is often shaped like a hemisphere (especially when younger) or takes on a dome-like form, especially when mature. The leaves are 4–12 cm long and wide, palmately lobed with five, seven, or nine acutely pointed lobes. The flowers are produced in small cymes, the individual flowers with five red or purple sepals and five whitish petals. The fruit is a pair of winged samaras, each samara 2–3 cm long with a 6–8 mm seed. The seeds of Japanese maple and similar species require stratification in order to germinate.

Even in nature, Acer palmatum displays considerable genetic variation, with seedlings from the same parent tree typically showing differences in such traits as leaf size, shape, and colour.

Japanese Maple has been cultivated in Japan for centuries and in temperate areas around the world since the 1800s.[3] The first specimen of the tree reached England in 1820.

For centuries Japanese horticulturalists have developed cultivars from maples found in Japan and nearby Korea and China. They are a popular choice for bonsai[7] enthusiasts and have long been a subject in art.

Numerous cultivars are currently available commercially and are a popular item at garden centres and other retail stores in Europe and North America. Red-leafed cultivars are the most popular, followed by cascading green shrubs with deeply dissected leaves.

Preparations from the branches and leaves are used as a treatment in traditional Chinese medicine.

    Chinese Creepingfern - Sphenomeris chusana

Kingdom: Plantae  Subkingdom: Tracheobionta  Division: Pteridophyta

Class: Filicopsida   Order: Polypodiales    Family: Dennstaedtiaceae   Genus: Odontosoria

A pretty, lacy medium sized fern with short-creeping to sub-erect rhizomes. Grows well under medium to high light in well-drained, moist garden soil or potting mix. Native from Madagascar to Polynesia and Japan.

    Rare in cultivation.

The Chinese creepingfern is generally described as a Perennial Forb or herb.

    Description
The hairless fronds of the fern are glossy light green on burnt-orange stalks and are finely divided (divided 3 times). They can grow from 2 to 5 feet tall and clumps can reach several feet in diameter. Spores are formed at the tips of the smallest segments.

    Habitat and Geographic Range
Odontosoria chinensis  is indigenous to Hawai'i, other parts of Polynesia, and east Asia. It is commonly found in forest openings and other disturbed areas such as along trails or roads, or on landslides when there is adequate moisture. This fern grows from sea level to an elevation of at least 4,000 feet.

    Propagation by Cuttings
Sphenomeris chinensis is most easily propagated from rhizome cuttings. Cuttings should have a minimum of 3 or 4 mature fronds and some new growth.

    Propagation by Division
Sphenomeris chinensis clumps can be easily dug up and divided. Divisions should not be smaller than 4 to 6 inches in diameter.
