MARTIN PARR (b. 1952, UK)

Martin Parr: Common Sense, 2002

SIGNED Import Artists' Monograph

Martin Parr by Val Williams, published by Phaidon, 2002. This encyclopedia of Martin Parr covers his long career as an image maker and has an insightful text written by long-standing friend and colleague, Val Williams. The book was produced to accompany his retrospective exhibition at the Barbican in London, which then toured over 10 more venues. A detailed analysis of Parr's development and career shows how he became a passionate collector of ephemera. Published by Phaidon Press Ltd., London, UK, 2002. Text by Val Williams. Designed by UNA (London) Designers. Printed in Hong Kong. Simultaneously issued in Italian by Contrasto. A second edition was released in 2003 as a softback in English, French and German. Hardbound, 352 pp., 597 four-color images. SIGNED by artist on title page. Dimensions: 9-7/8" x 11-3/8". BRAND NEW.

For much of his career, Martin Parr has excelled at skewering the eccentricities and peculiarities of contemporary national culture in his native Great Britain and beyond—in particular those having to do with food, tourism, bad fashion choices, and . . . more food.

On a recent trip to Mexico, Parr was struck by the clear impact of America's pop culture on Mexican life—the juxtaposition of Mickey Mouse with brightly colored saints, Nike logos with Day of the Dead skulls, and Coca Cola with cacti. Mexico presents his journey into and beyond the country's clichés. Many of the visual themes will be familiar to Parr fans, including colorful and mocking close-ups of food, hats, signs, and souvenirs, garishly shot with medical efficiency. And a darker underlying theme emerges—as in much of his later work—of the corruption of authentic cultural forms by global consumer culture. This work both critiques and celebrates this corruption. As he puts it, "What I am saying is that it's a good and a bad thing. I'm constantly trying to express ambiguity. And that's what photography does very well."

A retrospective of Parr's work, Martin Parr: Photographic Works 1971 - 2000 debuted at the Barbican Gallery, London (2002) and traveled in Europe through 2005. Organized by the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, Bradford and the Barbican Gallery, London, with the support of Magnum Photos, London (Parr has been a member since 1994), this major retrospective examined the career of Martin Parr, arguably the most influential and innovative figure in British social documentary photography. Bringing together around 150 works and several installations, the exhibition explored the provocative, incisive and humorous nature of Parr's internationally established and distinctive vision.
