FROM SOFA CUSHIONS TO CITY ARCHITECTURE: THE HISTORY OF GERMAN WORKSHOPS AND GARDEN CITY OF HELLERAU
At the beginning of the 20th century, the German workshops in Hellerau stood on an equal footing with the workshops for art in Munich and the Wiener Werkstatte in Austria.
Hellerau, located in the northern part of Dresden, was Germany’s first garden city. Begun in 1909, the furniture manufacturer and Werkbund co-founder Karl Schmidt planned to create a housing estate for his workers. Influenced by the idea of social reform, he wanted to unite living with work, culture and education. The architects and Werkbund members Richard Riemerschmid, Hermann Muthesius and Heinrich Tessenow were just some of those whose designs were incorporated into the scheme.
This volume offers a comprehensive appreciation of the subject offering a richly illustrated history of the German Workshops at Hellerau, its work and the development of the garden city itself. A vital resource for those interested in early 20th century German design and the movements that followed, covering furniture, architecture, hardware, industrial design and equipment, housewares including ceramics and many other related objects. At the back is a comprehsive index section offering a timeline, bibliographies, exhibition notes, biographies of the artists and designers etc.
CONDITION: The condition is very good plus. Minor shelf wear and a little dusty along the top edge but otherwise with minimal signs of use. Inside it is very clean and bright and without inscriptions. A superb reference, extremely hard to find.
