Description

Magazine

Chamber's Journal

April 1 1895

PB, 7 x 10", about 80 pages, in fair condition for over 120. The front cover is detached, chipped, etc

Fascinating - both the articles and the advertisements

This one has pieces on
The Dockisation of the River Avon (2.25 pages), Biribi - French military discipline (2 pages), Nicotiana (2 pages - are cigarettes bad for you? Amazing facts, including how smoking was used as a political statement in 1848, and how an officer died when the mixture of tobacco and turpentine he was smoking for his asthma exploded), The Great Indian (Trigonometrical) Survey (2.5 pages), The State and the Telegraphs (2.5 pages - how the government had taken over the telegraph service in 1870, producing 'a startling increase in the number of telegraphs sent'), The Humours of the House of Commons (2.5 pages, most entertaining!), Submarine Warfare (1, very detailed, page), and Snake Taming (2.25 pages - pythons, cobra and the tree-boa, 'probably the most persistently savage serpent in the world')

These magazines are an absolute treasure trove to the historian, IMHO!

Payment

Postage I try to be very fair with postage costs, as I fully realise they can be offputting, but if you bid on items, I take it that you're accepting these. They cover envelopes, packing materials, stamps, and trips to the Post Office

Items will almost always come out to you next day. I always get a Proof of Posting certificate, and if an item does get lost in the post I will forward it to you for you to make a claim, as the Post Office will not reimburse Sellers for their actual loss on the item, but will only refund what we originally paid for it. You as the Buyer can claim the full amount of your loss

However, in over 12,000 parcels I've mailed out over the last fifteen years only about ten have gone astray, and most of these were overseas

If you're at all worried about losing something, do ask for Recorded Delivery - £1.30 extra in the UK and £5.65 for overseas

Shipping

I ship every couple of days, by Royal Mail or, for heavier items, using the courier myHermes. If you pay sooner rather than later, the item will, of course, get to you more quickly!

Non-UK buyers I will mail you as soon as possible with both Airmail and Surface postal charges (or just Airmail if it's a very light item) - please don't pay until we've communicated on this. Please use PayPal. (I'm afraid I can only take cheques or postal orders if they are UK ones)

Airmail takes between three and five days. The Post Office warns that Surface mail to the USA, Australia, etc, can take as long as 12 weeks, but it is, obviously, a lot cheaper

In practice, American buyers tell me that Surface mail usually takes between 14 and 21 days (and apparently it actually travels by air, filling any space after the official Airmail items are loaded)

Terms of Sale

If there should be any problem on receipt of your item, please get in touch and I will sort it out!
