This variety is particularly attractive to a wider range of growers because is it very cold-hardy and can be grown in areas where you normally don't find tropicals. Musa Basjoo is stated to grow in Zones 5-11* making it hardy to -20 degrees F. In these climates, we would recommend protecting with a heavy layer of mulch in the winter or bringing it indoors in a sunny location for the winter.

This particular variety of banana does flower and fruit and although the fruit is inedible, the flower is spectacular to say the least! This plant is truly a conversation piece. It is very noticable in the landscape with it's bright green color.  When the wind stirs, it's beautiful large leaves(can be 6' long each) wave back and forth. The pictures in this listing show various stages of our banana plants growing in different areas of our landscape/nursery. Photos are for reference only. The average mature height of these is 10-12' and the circumference of some of the stumps can be as large as 20". Massive!

Planted in a sunny location and given plenty of water and regular fertilizer, this plant grows very rapidly especially if the soil is tilled well and mulched. We have grown some of these indoors in a sunny location, but they don't grow as fast or as large and the plant generally has a weaker stem.

Shipping:

This plant WILL be cut back to accommodate the 48" shipping box(as minimally as possible). This in no way hurts this plant. We have actually cut a large/mature banana tree in half and the plant continues to grow from the middle out. These are very prolific and really want to grow for you. It will be shipped bare root with moist wrap. It is your responsibility to unwrap and plant immediately upon receipt. They will ship USPS Priority with delivery confirmation. All plants are healthy and alive when they are shipped. 

Please do not order if your area is experiencing freezing weather.

We recommend this plant for indoor growth if you are late in your growing season unless you have above freezing weather year round.
