The city has a population of 248,948 (2010 census), 70 percent of the entire population of The Bahamas (353,658). Nassau was formerly known as Charles Town; it was burned to the ground by the Spanish in 1684, but later rebuilt and renamed Nassau in 1695 in honor of the Dutch Stadtholder and later also King of England, Scotland and Ireland, William III from the Dutch House of Orange-Nassau. This restaurant advertising card states that the eatery specializes in Chinese Food and Charcoal Flame N.Y. Sirloin Steak. The card is postmarked and hand dated November 24, 1970. On the card's reverse, it contains what it calls a Bahamian Chinese proverb: "You no go wrong with Wong; Bring whole family along." The card is crisply colored but shows some edge wear.
