This is a rare March 30th, 1959 playbill from the one-week, Post-Broadway engagement of the WILLIAM INGE play "THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS" at the American Theatre in St. Louis, Missouri. (The production opened December 5th, 1957 at the Music Box Theatre in New York City and ran for 468 performances before going on the road.) ..... The play starred BARBARA BAXLEY, AUDREY CHRISTIE and GEORGE L. SMITH and featured SANDY DENNIS as "Reenie Flood" (in what had been her Broadway debut), DON BRIGGS, EVAN EVANS, CHARLES SAARI, DOUG LAMBERT, CARL REINDEL, WAYNE ROBERTSON and EDWARD EARLE ..... Side Note: The Broadway understudy for the role of "Reenie Flood" had been TUESDAY WELD in her only Broadway credit. Ironically, Miss Weld was replaced as an understudy late in the run by SANDY DENNIS who would eventually appear in the production before participating in the national tour ..... CREDITS: Book by WILLIAM INGE (the Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright of "Come Back, Little Sheba", "Picnic" and "Bus Stop" commited suicide in 1973); Sets designed by BEN EDWARDS; Costumes designed by LUCINDA BALLARD; Directed by ELIA KAZAN; Produced by SAINT SUBBER and ELIA KAZAN ..... DETAILS: The 32 page playbill measures 6" X 9 1/4" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and wonderful vintage advertising, but no cast photos or bios ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a corner crease to the cover, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian.
