“Bleed the Night” is the first full length album from The Dying Effect and was just recently released in late October. With raging bass lines, coupled with intricate melodies and aggressive guitar harmonies, The Dying Effect creates a unique sound to metal. The mixture of raw screaming and soft vocals sets the tone and atmosphere for each song, creating anything from pure angry aggression to sympathetic tones. The opening track, ‘Bleed the Night’ which is also the title track, starts off with a powerful guitar riff and a fierce scream from Billy. It’s a high paced song full of spark and anger. It breaks down into Daryl’s singing in the chorus which almost transforms the song and gives it a new feel. ‘Where Once Laid To Sleep’ gives the same vibe. Daryl’s strong vocals intertwined with heavy guitar and bass, coupled with agonizing screams makes for a powerful song. ‘Awakening’ is one of the slower songs on the CD. Daryl dominates this song with his outspoken lyrics and heavy drums. The ending really adds character and feeling to the song when Daryl’s voice fades into a distant echo. The CD ends off with one of my favorite songs, ‘Rising Star’. It’s an acoustic song with soft guitar and mellow vocals. It’s very different from the rest of the CD, but it still fits in very well. The song makes for such a good ending to a great CD. One aspect that I really like in these guys’ song writing is how they slow the tempo down during a fast paced song and soften the song during the chorus and then bring back the energy again to finish off the song. They possess a lot of talent for four guys from a small town. Everything from the vocals, to the guitars to the bass and drums is seemingly perfect. I’m also truly amazed at how well Daryl pulls off playing the drums and singing at the same time. That takes a lot of talent to pull off. “Bleed the Night” is a lot better than most CD’s put out by small bands. I honestly have not taken it out of my CD player for a week. The Dying Effect is currently on tour throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan. This band is just as amazing live, perhaps even better, then they are on record. They create a ton of energy and get the crowd really excited about the show. They pump that sound through the speakers with indefinable force. Definitely a band you should check out live. You won’t be disappointed; they really do put on an awesome show. -Purple Poison
