ANOTHER LOVELY AND VERY RARE ITEM FROM MY PERSONAL ANTIQUECOLLECTION2020.

OFFERED TODAY IS THIS BEAUTIFUL LOOKING George III mahogany tea caddy with strung inlay and silver mounts. Fitted with a pair of tea boxes each with ovoid hinged covers and a compartment for a set of six teaspoons and sugar tongs along with an associated set of silver spoons and tongs.

DESCRIPTION:

This is a BEAUTIFUL AND RARE mahogany tea caddy dating from circa 1800-1810. The construction of this lovely caddy is really well made. The oval lidded tea compartments are so well fitted that they literally glide into position when put back into the box. I think this is a cabinet makers piece as it is so well made. It has lovely stringing and a nice Georgian silver looped handle. The base of the handle is marked with 2 English silver hall marks but no date mark. The tea boxes have 99% of the original coating on the insides. What makes this caddy irresistibly rare are the provisions at the side of the tea boxes for a set of six teaspoons and ‘Apostle’ sugar tongs. There are a set of teaspoons in the compartment and a set of tongs. They are not the originals and the spoons date to 1933 and the tongs to 1896. The caddy is in lovely condition showing some light cracking to the veneer in places and some wear ‘nibbles’ along the inner edge just below where the lid closes. This is a truly beautiful antique. The caddy measures 21.9cms (219mm) in length by 14.6cms (146mm) in width and 13.4cms (134mm) in height. It weighs 1.743kg. Note: there is no key to this item and the lock has not been checked for operation.
