This book is the second in series that focuses on the New Haven Railroad’s Old Colony Division that extended across southeastern Massachusetts from the city of Boston to the tip of Cape Cod from the early 1900s through the 1960s.

The latest, revisiting the New Haven Railroad’s Old Colony lines, purchased during the 19th century to offer an entrance to Boston from the south, builds upon the previous volume to display the rise and fall of Boston area commuter service to the south, as well as the line’s extensive seasonal trains carrying New Yorkers to the beaches of Cape Cod.

There’s a lot to like about this book: the quality, color covers, the maps, the index, and, most of all, the photographs of trains and stations, ranging from Boston’s huge South Station to rural branch line stations.

There are also numerous photographs showing the New Haven’s pioneer electrification of mainlines, such as the line to Nantasket Beach, and the lines from Providence serving the Rhode Island cities of Bristol and Warren.

This volume contains numerous photographs of early generation diesels and RDC units which the New Haven used extensively during the mid-20th Century. This is an excellent book for modelers interested in a broad range of New England railroad stations.
