This is a rare ticket envelope and ticket stub from the October 8th, 1952 performance of DANNY KAYE and his Variety Revue at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco, California. (Initially scheduled as a two-week event beginning September 7th, 1952, the engagement was extended into the following month.) ..... As part of the Gala Post-Season Event for the SAN FRANCISCO CIVIC LIGHT OPERA ASSOCIATION, the engagement starred DANNY KAYE who was supported by the PEIRO BROTHERS "Our Good Neighbors from Argentina"; REX RAMER "Vocal Varieties"; THE DUNHILLS "Rhythmic Dance Stylists"; JOE JACKSON, Jr., Son of the Original in "Following in His Dad's Footsteps" and CARMEN TORRES "Continental Singing Star" ..... Born David Daniel Kaminsky in Brooklyn, New York, DANNY KAYE (1913-1987) had a very mixed career in entertainment prior to his motion picture debut. He was a born entertainer and though most people think of Kaye as a comedian, both music and dance were a major part of his early act in vaudeville and night clubs. He initially gained fame (on Broadway) as the first man ever to sing a song in which he named 54 Russian composers (real and imaginary) in 38 seconds. The song was Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin's "Tschaikowsky," which Kaye first performed in Moss Hart's musical "LADY IN THE DARK", in the Alvin Theater on January 21st, 1941. In 1939 Kaye made his Broadway debut, appearing in "THE STRAW HAT REVUE" with Imogene Coca, Alfred Drake and Jerome Robbins. But it took his subsequent stint in "Lady in the Dark" to bring him any real acclaim. Kaye had married a young woman named Sylvia Fine in 1940, and this marked another turning point in his career, because Sylvia Fine would become not only his manager, but the author of some of his best gags and routines, as well as his lyricist. It was she who wrote the tongue-twisting songs and monologues in "The Straw Hat Revue" with which Kaye had captured Moss Hart's attention. In October of 1941, Kaye finally achieved stardom with his uproarious frolics in Cole Porter's musical "LET'S FACE IT!". In 1944, Danny Kaye would trade the Broadway stage for the Hollywood studio and appear first in the box office hit "UP IN ARMS" and later in "THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY", "HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON", "WHITE CHRISTMAS" (with Bing Crosby) and "THE FIVE PENNIES" to name just a few. In the 1960's Kaye hosted "The Danny Kaye Show" on CBS for four seasons (1963-67), and then returned to Broadway in 1970 in Richard Rodgers' musical "TWO BY TWO," in which he appeared for 10 months either in a wheelchair or on crutches after injuring his hip. Kaye spent most of his final years dedicated to raising funds for charities. He died on March 3rd, 1987 at the age of 74 .....
