Description:

Septarian Nodules were formed during the Cretaceous period, 50-70 million years ago when the Gulf of Mexico reached what is now Southern Utah. Decomposing sea life killed by volcanic eruptions had a chemical attraction to the sediment around them, forming mud balls. As the ocean receded, the sea bed and the balls were left to dry out and crack. Over time Calcite from decomposing shells was carried down into the cracks in the mud balls. Under extreme heat and pressure, the Bentonite heavy clay reacted with the Calcite forming a thin wall of Aragonite.
