Black Stag Beetle - Dorcus titanus

    Distribution: China

Body length: Male:36-86 mm Female:33-39 mm

    Order:

    Coleoptera

    Family:

    Lucanidae

    Genus:

    Dorcus

Dorcus is a genus of the family Lucanidae of stag beetles. Of the 30-odd species, most occur in Asia and India; two are found in southern Europe, and three species are from North America.

Dorcus has thick jaws but also thin feelers on the outside and inside. Underneath, he has a brown velvet-like beard that helps him get food in his mouth. His jaws are over half inch long and almost one inch wide. At the end of his spiny legs are sharp double-hooks that stick into anything. Just behind the head is a matte black thorax, followed by a shiny, reflective black abdomen. There he has thick outer wings, but you'll be surprised to also see what's underneath: very thin, fragile wings he can use for flying. Even today these semi-transparent wings are very oily. They have two sections, with the last one-half inch folding but also twisting back up to meet the rest of the wing. Both sections fit neatly under the hard outer wing, and can only do so because the soft stomach under the top wing collapses to accommodate them.

Description: Male 32-80 mm including mandibles; Female 35-55 mm. Elongate, somewhat flat. Dull black with blackish anntenae and legs. Male's antler-like jaws have small teeth along inner edge and a pair of big teeth toward the bottom, and are forked at end. Head of a large male reaches nearly the length of its prothorax and abdomen combined.
Habitat: Tropical and sub-tropical rain forests.
    Range: S China
Life cycle: The insect life cycle is said to be largely unknown in a natural setting. Under captive rearing (26 degrees C. in summer; 18 degrees C. in winter) of one generation.
    Duration of larva:
            Male: about 10-12 months (L1: 1 month; L2: 1 month; and L3: 8-10 months); and
            Female: 4-6 months       (L1: 1 month; L2: 1 month; and L3: 2-4 months)
     Alias of pupa: 1 month
Note that the duration of egg is about 1 month.
