These fantastic tropical plants are not orchids .

The Black Bat Flower, 'Tacca chantrieri', is a very unusual species with black bat shaped flowers up to 12" across, and long 'whiskers' that can grow up to 28".

Tacca chantrieri grow wild in the tropical forest in Yunnan Province, China, where they can get as tall as 36".

These beautiful flowers grow best in well-drained soil and high humidity. They like shade, and good air circulation. They don't like too much heat and air that is too dry.

They will flower year around.

 
The soil is one of the most important things for success with Taccas. The mixture needs
to be light, very porous, something that drains well.

Use something like:
60% peat moss
30% perlite
10% vermiculite
The soil should be a little bit acid

WATER REQUIREMENTS : always keep moist
MIN. TEMP. : mid 50's F and 15-20 C
FLOWER : year round
