What is Choline Bitartrate?
The active ingredient in choline bitartrate is choline. However, choline isn’t absorbed into the cells on its own and needs to be combined with another chemical group to help it get across the cell membrane. Bitartrate is added to improve the absorption of choline into the cells.
Choline is an important building block for neurotransmitters like acetylcholine as well as nerve cell membranes. The body uses choline as the basis for building acetylcholine — which is an important chemical messenger in the brain. Neurotransmitters are needed to send signals from one nerve cell to another. As a result, acetylcholine is required for transferring information around the brain — making it especially important for storing and retrieving memories. Acetylcholine is just as abundant in the peripheral nervous system as it is within the brain itself. Outside the brain, acetylcholine is responsible for muscle contraction.
